  • The Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) has teamed up once again with the New York Yankees, the New York Police Department (NYPD) and NYC Parks to offer a summer baseball and softball league.  Through this collective effort, Summer Night Lights will assist in providing young people with an athletic and productive outlet during evening hours on Tuesday and Wednesday nights during the months of July and August.  Summer Night Lights games serve as an outlet for recreation, social responsibility and healthy competition.

    Summer Night Lights is a free, structured league opportunity for youth between the ages of 12 and 18 years old to play in a baseball or co-ed softball league. All games are refereed by professional umpires and equipment is provided.

  • Games will be played every Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 4:00pm - 9:00pm, beginning July 9th through the end of August.

  • Games will be played at Elston Gene Howard Field (right across the street from Yankee Stadium).  This is the former baseball diamond of the original Yankee Stadium!

    • Be expected to follow and respect all rules
    • Show up on time and be able to fully commit to the communicated schedule
    • Will receive equipment including baseballs or softballs, bats, catcher's equipment, helmets and batting gloves.

    • Is it still possible for me to submit an application if I am not part of a team? 
    • Yes, if you do not have a team, please register through our individual interest form. When the applications closes on April 12th, DYCD will reach out to pair players with a team that align with their skill and age level.

    • Is equipment provided?  
    • Yes, thanks to the contribution from the NY Yankees, the league will be receiving equipment sets for each team such as baseballs or softballs, bats, catcher's gear, helmets, and batting gloves.

    • Where are applications available? 
    • Applications are exclusively accessible through our online platform. If you are interested in joining the league, kindly fill out an application.

    • What are the fees involved in joining the league? 
    • The Summer Night Lights League is free of cost. Participants will be provided with equipment, uniforms, and all games will be officiated by professional referees.

    • What should I do if I am unable to participate on all the designated days during the league? 
    • Each team is required to commit to all scheduled dates within the league. Team Schedules will be released in early June to allow proper planning. Regrettably, teams unable to commit to all dates will not be eligible to participate in the league.

    • What is the protocol in place for inclement weather, such as rainy conditions? 
    • In the event of rain or unfavorable weather conditions, the NYPD, NYC Parks, and DYCD will be evaluating field conditions to determine the safety of youth play. Any decisions to cancel games will be communicated by 1 pm each game day. All teams will contacted in advance.

    • What is the minimum number of youth required to form a team? 
    • A minimum of 10 players is necessary to participate in the game, with a maximum roster of 20 youth permitted.

    • Are spectators allowed? 
    • Yes, parents and spectators are permitted to attend, but it is essential that they adhere to all regulations, display good sportsmanship, and refrain from disrupting the game.

    • Is transportation provided? 
    • Unfortunately, transportation will not be provided. It is expected that teams will make their own travel arrangements and arrive punctually for their scheduled game.

    • What safety protocols are in place? 
    • Emergency first aid kits, ice packs, and a defibrillator will be available on site. It is also advisable for each team to have their own set of emergency protocols.

      As games will conclude late in the evening, the NYPD will be in attendance to ensure safety, prevent conflicts, and assist youth in traveling home safely.

    • In the event of games being cancelled, will there be a plan to reschedule them? 
    • Decisions regarding rescheduling will be determined based on scheduling and field availability. Communication regarding rescheduled matches will be provided in advance.
